fantasy of being buried alive?
Saturday, July 7 2007 • 9:08 PM MDT

apparently, a german art student studying in china got to live out his fantasy of becoming a member of emperor qin's terra cotta army when he dressed up as a terra cotta soldier, jumped the fence, and stood still amongst the terra cotta figures at the famous tomb in xi'an, china. i don't know if he realizes how many (non-terra cotta) people were probably buried alive along with the terra cotta army at the time of emperor qin's death. still, this is some hilarious shit. (he was let off with a stern warning.)

in other news, a great article on being examined by fresh med students as a standardized patient at georgetown. this is hysterical, and particularly insightful for anyone pursuing a medical career.

speaking of medical nerdy stuff ... if you haven't seen it already, dr. michelle au's the twelve types of medical students along with a bunch of other comics and a very interesting blog.

what's wrong with this picture?

so i have seasonal allergies, and claritin doesn't work very well for me. that's why i tried to get a prescription for allegra-D filled today. the pharmacist informs me that my insurance company, pacificare, doesn't pay for allegra-D, unless the doctor has "preauthorized" it with the insurance company. they do this because claritin is now available over-the-counter.

never mind that claritin is a different drug, or that claritin doesn't resolve my symptoms, and that the doctor prescribed allegra-D for this very reason. essentially, pacificare wants the doctor to ask permission from the insurance company before prescribing this drug. from what i am told, this is a common practice with pacificare.

i thought it was the doctor's job to be making the medical decisions, not the goons at the insurance company. besides, there's a basic tenet in medicine that you are not allowed to have a clinical opinion until you have met the patient. in other words, if you haven't met me, you can't tell me what medicine i should be prescribed. ergo, pacificare (having never met me) should have NO say in what drugs i should be taking for my symptoms.

granted, i'm not dying from this – it's seasonal allergy medicine, not a kidney transplant – but the principle of the matter is disgusting. the fact that the insurance companies control healthcare in this country is the very reason why our healthcare system is so very broken.

why did you change your taps??? *sniffles*
ah, it's good to be back home. the air is pleasantly dry, the sun is out, the grass is green, and my favorite bar (the boulder catacombs) ... has stopped serving the local microbrews on tap??? wtf!! the awful things that happen when i'm not around. (it's still a good bar, but seriously ... i can drink stella artois anywhere i want. where's my fat tire, left hand, 90 shilling, sunshine wheat? any of them???) oh well. life is filled with tragedies.

apartment-hunting is very frustrating. there are a million options, but none of them are really ideal for me ... bad locations, interesting neighborhoods, great apartments with awful landlords, non-ideal move-in dates. i think i've narrowed it down to a few though, and should have it figured out by tomorrow (i hope). and then, i will commence my slow and steady journey towards bankruptcy! woohoo!

so earlier this week, robert and kate and i went out for movie + beer + late night food at IHOP. and that is where we noticed something very peculiar about their condiment holder:

bwahahahaha! okay, we're perverts. anyway, gotta love IHOP. the utmost in class. check out their specials board:

would you like some jolepenno poppers?

anyway. onto more important things:

(( click for next still from ratatouille ))

uhh ... go see RATATOUILLE! it's an AWESOME movie. it's got adventure, it's got suspense, it's hilarious, it's set in paris, it has great food, it has amazing animation, and it has a hot girl in it – what more could you want?
